Attic Insulation

Over 90% of homes in North America are under-insulated. The attic is a key point of insulation failure in most of these homes … and it’s also one of the easiest, fastest, and most accessible to fix — with the help of the professionals at COZY.

The effect — higher energy bills, more wear-and-tear on your HVAC, and more difficulty maintaining a comfortable temperature in your own home.

If you climb up into your attic, the insulation is the foamy stuff sprayed around the attic floor. It should be loose and fluffy, at least ten inches thick (preferably closer to 14 inches thick).

But if the insulation is settled, it may be hard like rubber and only a few inches thick. This insulation is past its prime and needs to be replaced.

Aeroseal

Your HVAC system controls the temperature in your home by heating or cooling air and then distributing that conditioned air throughout the home. With central HVAC systems, that air is distributed throughout the home through a series of ducts.

But what if the ducts themselves have cracks or gaps in them?

The conditioned air — hot or cold — will seep out of the ducts and into the attic or the outside air.

You purchased energy from the power company to change the temperature of that air. You put wear and tear on your HVAC system to do it. Fossil fuels may have been burned to create that energy. And here’s that conditioned air you paid for — bleeding into the outside world, where you can’t enjoy it.

The result — you have to run your HVAC longer and harder than you have to to maintain a consistent temperature.

Insulation Removal

How often do you go up into your attic? Maybe once a year, to pull out the holiday decorations?

Next time you go up there, take a look around. Look at the insulation. What do you see?

Is it fluffy? Clean? Thick? (At least ten inches.)

Or is it hard and compacted? Black and splotchy? Thin? (Sunken down to a few inches or less.)

Many homebuilders cut costs by using cheap insulation. It does fine at first … but in a matter of years, it deflates and hardens. The air pockets in fluffy insulation is what helps it prevent heat transfer. If the cheap insulation settles, it no longer prevents heat transfer like it should.

If you have lived in your home a few years and never addressed the attic insulation, this has probably happened to you … and it’s costing you.

Duct Replacement

As much as we love sealing ducts with patented Aeroseal technology, ductwork is not always salvageable.

HVAC ducts have a maximum usable life of 20-25 years. After 15 years the ductwork starts to deteriorate significantly. If your ductwork is approaching either one of these milestones, we need to think seriously about replacing them.

Yes, replacing HVAC ductwork is a serious project. No, that’s never fun.

But if it’s time, it’s time. Replacing obsolete HVAC comes with the following benefits:

Attic Ventillation

Attics aren’t supposed to be airtight safes. They’re supposed to breathe.

Hot air rises. If you’ve ever been to your attic, you will notice that it is often hotter than the rest of the house.

Without proper attic ventilation, warm and moist air tends to rise and gather in a layer high in the attic, while cool dry air settles toward the attic floor. Hot humid air can damage the wood beams supporting the roof, leading to costly and unexpected roof repairs.

Nor is this a problem that will stay contained to the attic. High moisture content in the attic can cause discoloration of the drywall and wallpaper in the lower levels of the home — the parts of the house where you actually live.

Air Scrubber

You might expect the air in your home to be cleaner than the air outside. After all, your home is a fortress against rain, wind, and sunlight. Why not germs and allergens too?

After all, outdoors is where nature is, and nature doesn’t wash its hands. Squirrels cough and pee there. How could it possibly be cleaner?

You might think this … but you would be wrong. Studies by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have repeatedly shown indoor air to be anywhere from 2X to 5X dirtier than the air outside.

How is this possible?

Because dust, pollen, allergens, fungus, and even bacteria and viruses — if they find a way in, they have no way out. Improper sealing and a worn-out HVAC system only exacerbate the problem.
